CitiTime: a system for rapid creation of portable next-generation telephony services
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present the architecture, design and experimental research prototype implementation of CitiTime, an open system architecture for the rapid development of advanced next-generation telephony services that overcomes some of the limitations of the current closed PSTN architecture and service model. CitiTime allows communication sessions to be set up over the PSTN, the Internet, or a combination of both. Services can be provided by multiple cooperating distributed service providers, some of whom may use third-party software components which can be ``plugged in'' or even dynamically downloaded from the network as needed. This allows advanced services to be deployed and delivered to users rapidly, a crucial requirement in the increasingly competitive telecommunications services marketplace. CitiTime is built upon an object-oriented call model called citi call control (CCC) which we have de®ned as a small set of extensions to the standard Java telephony API (JTAPI) call model. JTAPI is designed primarily for centralized, single provider, call center type applications. Our extensions provide support for multiple, distributed providers as well as advanced services. CCC hides details of underlying call-state management, protocols and hardware from applications. The CitiTime prototype software is currently operational in our laboratory. We brie ̄y describe its current implementation as well as future work to address issues such as fault tolerance. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights

متن کاملQoS-Enabled Voice Support in the Next-Generation Internet: Issues, Existing Approaches and Challenges
The Internet is under rapid growth and continuous evolution in order to accommodate an increasingly large number of applications with diverse service requirements. In particular, Internet telephony, or voice over IP is one of the most promising services currently being deployed. Besides the potentially significant cost reduction, Internet telephony can offer many new features and easier integra...
متن کاملUsing differentiated services to support Internet telephony
Internet Telephony has been deemed as a promising candidate for the next generation telephone system. However, unstable voice quality is the main problem that prevents the Internet Telephone from competing with the traditional circuit switched telephone. Current Internet supports only a best-effort service class, which does not provide any bandwidth or delay guarantee for the voice packets. Dur...
متن کاملVoice over packet reliability issues for next generation networks
Next Generation Networks (NGNs) will support a variety of communications services (data, video, and voice) seamlessly. Customers will demand that these networks be highly reliable as more and more traffic and services use them. Because of the historically exceptional reliability of wireline voice telephony, the reliability of voice services supported by NGN Voice Over Packet (VOP) necessitates ...

In the last decade, communication technology has seen a rapid advance in the Internet as well as in wireless telephony. New and enhanced access networks, end-devices (e.g., 22]) and services (e.g., 21]) are now becoming commercially viable. Simultaneously, there are many commercial eeorts to provide integration among the diierent networks and services 23, 24]. However, there is little or no sup...
